For small business & nonprofits

The IT partner a small office actually needs.

Rouge Tech is a one-person engineering practice for the technology problems that fall between too small for a managed IT firm and too complex for the office manager to handle in their spare time. Workstation setup, cloud migrations, automations, a website that actually loads — done with the same discipline I bring to every line of production software I ship.

What I do for small businesses

A practical menu — engineered, not improvised.

12 service areas
01

Workstation & drive setup.

New-computer setup, drive cloning, data migration from old machines, and a documented baseline so the next one takes an hour instead of a day.

  • Windows, macOS, Linux
  • Profile & app migration
  • Baseline image / checklist
02

Cloud file migrations.

Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Box — in any direction. Access rules, shared-drive structure, and a paper trail so you can prove what moved where.

  • Google Workspace / M365
  • Shared-drive design
  • Access audit & cleanup
03

HR, payroll & business-software migrations.

The work profiled in the TCP case study — consolidating two partial systems into one authoritative platform, with a pilot-first, validated migration pattern.

  • Fixed-scope project
  • Pilot → validate → migrate
  • Clear boundaries & exclusions
04

Automations & workflow plumbing.

Zapier, Make, n8n, and light custom scripts for the repetitive tasks that add up — lead routing, form-to-record, report delivery, approvals, reminders.

  • Zapier / Make / n8n
  • Light custom scripting
  • Documented & handoff-ready
05

Email & domain setup.

Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 stood up properly — domains, DNS, aliases, shared inboxes, calendars, and sensible group structure from day one.

  • Domain & DNS configuration
  • Shared inboxes & aliases
  • SPF / DKIM / DMARC
06

Backup strategy.

A written backup plan and an actual implementation — for cloud accounts, workstations, and shared files — with a documented recovery drill so you know it works.

  • 3-2-1 backup strategy
  • Cloud & local targets
  • Test restore, not hope
07

Printer, scanner & shared drives.

The unglamorous backbone: network printers that stay on the network, scanners that file where they should, and shared drives with permissions that make sense.

  • Network print setup
  • Scan-to-folder / email
  • Permission hygiene
08

Passwords & security hygiene.

Team password-manager rollout, 2FA everywhere it belongs, SSO where it makes sense, and a written baseline so new hires inherit good practice by default.

  • 1Password / Bitwarden rollout
  • 2FA / SSO configuration
  • Offboarding runbook
09

VPN & remote access.

Modern remote-access for a distributed team — Tailscale, WireGuard, Cloudflare Zero Trust, or a plain business VPN — sized to how you actually work.

  • Tailscale / WireGuard
  • Zero-trust alternatives
  • Split-tunnel & policy
10

Websites, built to last.

A straightforward business website — clean, fast, editable by you, without locking you into an expensive platform. For custom software needs, New Ark Digital is ready to help.

  • Webflow / Framer / custom
  • CMS-editable content
  • 90+ Core Web Vitals
11

Light custom software.

When off-the-shelf won’t fit, a small custom tool is often cheaper than the workaround. For larger builds, New Ark Digital is ready to help.

  • Internal tools & dashboards
  • API integrations
  • Built by New Ark Digital
12

Office networking & WiFi.

Up to about fifteen seats: proper access-point placement, hardwired backhaul, guest network, and a rack that doesn’t look like a nest. Bigger buildings get referred out.

  • Business-grade WiFi
  • VLAN & guest separation
  • Documented topology

TCP: two HR systems, one source of truth.

A fixed-scope migration from WorkBright into Zoho People — roughly fifty employees, onboarding workflows, clearance tracking, and PTO policy configured to match an actual handbook. Written up step by step, including everything that was explicitly out of scope.

How engagements work

Three ways to work together — pick the one that fits.

Each engagement begins with a no-cost consultation. The scope of the work determines the structure of the engagement: smaller requests remain straightforward, larger projects proceed under a signed agreement with a fixed fee, and continuing needs can be placed on a monthly retainer.

TIER 01

Remote Rescue

$40
~20 minutes, by video

The most direct way to get a qualified engineer working on a problem. Most routine questions are resolved during the session.

  • Screenshare diagnosis
  • Quick fixes applied live
  • Credited toward larger work
  • No drive-out fee
Best for: isolated issues with a single device or application.
TIER 02

Hourly consult

$150/hr
Minimum 1 hr, remote or on-site

For scoping, second opinions, audits, and discrete work that doesn’t warrant a full project.

  • Software & system audits
  • Pre-purchase gear guidance
  • Second-opinion reviews
  • Billed to the quarter-hour
Best for: pre-purchase reviews and vendor decisions.
TIER 03

Flat-rate project

From $800
Fixed scope, fixed fee

A written agreement with deliverables, exclusions, timeline, and 50/50 billing. The standard engagement for migrations, standardizations, and installs.

  • Signed agreement before work begins
  • 50% at kickoff, 50% at completion
  • Change-orders in writing
  • Pilot-first on data projects
Best for: platform migrations, office buildouts, and system standardizations.
TIER 04

Ongoing retainer

Custom
Monthly, priced per scope

For offices that want a dedicated engineer on call without the overhead of a full managed-IT firm. Offered selectively to ensure quality of service.

  • Priority response
  • Monthly block of hours
  • Quarterly infrastructure review
  • A dedicated engineer
Priced per engagement, based on scope and response requirements.
A note on retainers

Retainer pricing isn’t published because the appropriate amount depends substantially on monthly scope and response requirements. If you’d like to explore one, reach out and we can discuss what makes sense.

Fit

Who Rouge Tech is for — and isn’t.

A good fit

Built for these teams.

  • Small offices of 4–15 people — the current ceiling I can support well as one engineer.
  • Solo professionals & consultants (1–3 people) who need a real technologist, not a $99-an-hour helpdesk.
  • Family businesses & trades that have outgrown their first improvised systems.
  • Nonprofits & churches where technology decisions have historically been made by whoever was willing, not whoever was qualified.
  • Teams facing a migration — HR, CRM, file systems, email — where “we’ll figure it out ourselves” has started to feel like a bad plan.
Not a fit — and who is

Honest about my limits.

  • Larger organizations (25+ seats, multi-location) are better served by a managed-IT firm with on-call staffing.
  • 24/7 NOC-style coverage isn’t what I offer; if your operation requires that, I’ll recommend partners who do it properly.
  • Regulated compliance certifications (HIPAA attestation, SOC 2 audits, PCI scope) belong with specialist firms, not me.
  • Enterprise dealer platforms (Crestron, for example) require certifications I don’t carry.
  • Payroll & benefits administration belongs with your payroll provider; I’ll coordinate with them, not replace them.
From first call to handoff

How an engagement actually runs.

The structure below is deliberately boring. That’s what you want from the person handling your systems.

STEP 01

Free call.

30 minutes on the phone. You describe the situation, I ask questions, we decide together whether this is a fit before anyone signs anything.

STEP 02

Walkthrough & scoping.

For anything beyond a Remote Rescue, a short working session — on-site or by video — to see the systems involved and write down the real scope.

STEP 03

Written proposal.

Scope, exclusions, timeline, fee, billing, and feedback SLAs in one document. You sign only when you’re comfortable.

STEP 04

Pilot, then execute.

On data and platform work, a small pilot first, validated together, before the full migration. On installs, a careful, documented build.

STEP 05

Handoff & documentation.

A structured walkthrough with your team, plus written documentation you own. I’m still here if you have questions later.

If you also need home work

The same engineer does both.

Many of my small-business clients started as neighbors with a WiFi problem. The Rouge Tech home-tech practice is the same person, same standards — just the residential side of the menu.
